“hope is a discipline”
The numerous opportunities to show up listed below bring to mind the wisdom of Mariame Kaba that “hope is a discipline.” In an interview by Kim Wilson and Brain Sonenstein featured in We Do This ‘Til We Free Us, Kaba said:
“…hope doesn’t preclude feeling sadness or frustration or anger or any other emotion that makes total sense…The idea of hope being a discipline is something I heard from a nun many years ago who was talking about it in conjunction with making sure we were of the world and in the world…The hope that she was talking about was this grounded hope that was practiced every day, that people actually practiced all the time.”
I’m inspired to mark my calendar with several of the events below to stay disciplined in my fight against white supremacy, and be in and of this world. I would love to see you there!

Embodying Care: Practices of Support this Election Season |
No matter what happens on November 5, we’re going to need each other. Join SURJ-TC for an election season focused on community building to sustain us in creating the world we want to live in. Together we can fight for our deepest longings while also taking care of ourselves and each other. Join us for one or all of these community building opportunities to support your body, mind, and heart as we show up during this election season. We will ground our work together in the somatic practices and guidance of Prentis Hemphill who reminds us that “when we focus on external change without tending to internal transformation, we act out the worst of ourselves in the places where it matters most.” – What it Takes to Heal We’ll practice movement as medicine, food for the soul, music to heal our hearts, courageous conversation, and more. Let’s set ourselves up to keep turning toward each other and building trust in relationships as we prioritize community care this fall and beyond. |

Doorknocking in River Falls, WI |
Join us for election doorknocking in River Falls, WI – Saturdays until election day! Register: https://www.mobilize.us/surj/event/654963/ The presidential election is nearly here! And our neighbors in the purple state of Wisconsin are under the spotlight as the nation focuses on just a handful of battleground states that could tip the election one way or the other. Come join fellow SURJ folks in an afternoon (or several!) of doorknocking in River Falls, to help Wisconsin turn its back on Trump and MAGA! As the Uncommitted Movement’s 9/19 statement says, while they cannot endorse Kamala Harris, “our movement’s best hope for change lies in growing our anti-war organizing power, and that power would be severely undermined by a Trump administration… We must block Donald Trump, which is why we urge Uncommitted voters to vote against him and avoid third party candidates that could inadvertently boost his chances.” It’s time to dump Trump for the final time! Join us – you won’t regret it if you do, but you may regret it if you don’t! |

The MN Free Palestine Coalition is holding a protest and march to mark the one-year anniversary of Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza on Sunday October 6th. Join the protest at 1:30 at Hennepin Avenue and Washington Avenue South in Minneapolis, at the Gateway Park. Expect this to be a longer demonstration. Help make this a massive crowd, marching in solidarity with Palestine! The entire world will be protesting that week! |

Please support and share the Institute of Aspiring Abolitionists’ Kickstarter |
The clock is ticking! This kickstarter needs to raise $210K by 11/19 – can you pitch in, and share this with your friends and networks? The Institute of Aspiring Abolitionists is raising funds to purchase a physical space to experiment with abolitionist frameworks of past (e.g., inner workings of the Underground Railroad), present (e.g., Relationships Evolving Possibilities, MH First), and future (to be determined in the space). SURJ-TC is excited about the many possibilities when the Institute has its own center. Can you help kick in? |

Would you like to buddy up with an imprisoned change-maker? |
The Incarcerated Workers’ Organizing Committee is looking for activists not currently incarcerated who would pair up with people who are currently incarcerated and who’d like to make changes in their situations. The amount a prisoner can do to improve the prisons is limited, and having a buddy outside who can do a little more can be helpful. Outside supporters can bring public attention to conditions within the prisons, and lobby for legislation that prisoners think would enable them to live better lives, and avoid returning to prison. IWOC hopes that you could commit to weekly phone calls with your incarcerated buddy and possible monthly visits(in-person or video) for a year. This is a new project, and you’d be among the people making this happen for the first time! Interested? Sign up here: http://bit.ly/changemakerbuddy |

SURJ-Twin Cities Chapter: Learn more – SURJ-TC is a Minnesota chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ). SURJ is a national network of groups and individuals organizing white people for racial justice. White people have been told for years by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) activists that we need to educate and organize our own people. So that’s what we try to do.
